Leonardo in detail

The life and work of the most accomplished artist of the Renaissance

Through his ingenuity, technical prowess and unparalleled curiosity, Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) embodies the Renaissance man according to the humanist ideal. An accomplished and incomparable master of painting, sculpture, cartography, anatomy, architecture, and many other fields, he captivates art historians, collectors, and the millions of visitors who flock to see his work each year. Leonardo's appeal is as broad as his interests, and his iconography permeates nearly every facet of Western culture: Vitruvian Man is engraved on millions of euro coins, The Last Supper is considered the most reproduced religious painting in history, and his Mona Lisa has fascinated countless artists and observers for centuries.

Published on the 500th anniversary of his death, this update of our XL-sized book is an unparalleled survey of Leonardo's life and work, complete with a catalog raisonné that also includes his lost paintings. The astonishing full-bleed details reveal every brushstroke, the precision of which testifies to the incredible talent of the artist-engineer.

An exhaustive catalog of Leonardo's approximately 700 drawings illustrates the scope of his creative activity. From schematics of complicated machines to portraits of plump cherubs, they reflect a boundless, visionary technical imagination, balanced by a meticulous and sensitive hand, which colors mundane moments with real emotion.

This book also includes a new foreword by Frank Zöllner, expanded exclusively for this special edition, which explores the latest scientific developments in Leonardo's inaugural work, as well as the history of the mesmerizing Salvator Mundi, recently auctioned for a record $450 million.
